On October 3, Pistons & Pretzels made its Japan debut, bringing the international Mobility Design community together in Tokyo for a car event with a slightly different agenda.
To the Japanese versionAfter more than ten years of Pistons & Pretzels in Germany and an ever-growing international community, it felt like the natural next step to take the event somewhere new. And Japan was an especially interesting place to do that.
Japanese and Western Automotive Design have developed from very different cultural contexts, with their own histories, influences, and ways of approaching mobility. We wanted to explore what those differences look like today, but also where they start to overlap. So, the idea behind this edition was simple: East meets West. Bringing people and perspectives from both sides together to exchange ideas, challenge each other’s thinking, and perhaps discover that some things are not quite as different as they first seem.
Most importantly, it gave the Automotive Design community a chance to do what Pistons & Pretzels has always been about: meet, talk, exchange ideas, and make new connections outside the usual work environment.

The vehicle lineup was an extension of that same exchange.
Honda R&D brought two milestones from its formative years: the T360, Honda’s first step into four-wheeled production, and the S800, which established the foundations of Honda’s sports car legacy. Both are rarely shown to the public, making their appearance at Pistons & Pretzels particularly special.
Meanwhile, Nissan took guests through three generations of its Z heritage: the 1972 Fairlady 240Z-G, the 1992 300ZX Twin-turbo 2-Seater T-Bar Roof, and the 2024 Z NISMO, which brought the story firmly into the present as the most performance-oriented version of Nissan’s modern Z sports car.

And then there were our friends from RoundCat Racing who paired Japanese kei trucks with a mini Porsche, bringing two very different sides of car culture together in one place.
Together with the cars rolled in by our guests, the result was a lineup that made the theme of the evening visible before a single conversation had even started.
Of course, the machines were only one part of the equation. The real point of this car event in Japan was the people around them.
Designers, creatives, and Automotive Design enthusiasts came together to talk about how they approach Design, where their perspectives differ, and where they overlap. Conversations that might start with a particular vehicle quickly moved into the bigger questions behind it: why certain forms resonate, how cultural context influences Design, and what happens when different approaches meet.
And sometimes, those supposedly different perspectives turned out not to be so different after all.
That is what made the Japan premiere more than simply another Pistons & Pretzels edition. It opened the community to a new part of the world while creating a space for people from different backgrounds to find common ground.
If this first edition showed us anything, it’s that bringing East and West together opens up plenty of interesting conversations, new connections, and maybe a few perspectives we’ll take with us into what comes next.
A huge thank you to all our partners and guests for making our first Pistons & Pretzels Japan not only a fantastic event, but also a pretty special way to close out our 2026 season.
And as for what comes next? 2027 is already in the works. Stay tuned! 👀

「Pistons & Pretzels」
