The “Automotive Design Experience” is a 4-day immersive full workshop programme dedicated to students, designers, and enthusiasts who want to explore the modern automotive design workflow in a real industry context.

Rather than a traditional course, the programme is structured as a full design experience, where each day functions as an independent workshop while contributing to a complete design pipeline journey.

Through advanced digital tools and innovative methodologies, participants will learn how to:

  • Correctly interpret a client brief and translate it into a coherent design concept.
  • Develop precise 3D models starting from sketches and moodboards.
  • Visualise concepts in realistic and immersive environments using VRED and virtual reality technologies.
  • Configure colours, materials, and finishes in real time using (example) Unreal Engine.
  • Experiment with artificial intelligence as a creative and design support tool.

The focus of the programme remains on understanding how an automotive design project is developed in the real professional world, from initial idea to final presentation quality output.

Each day of the programme is structured as an independent workshop module, including methodology introduction, tool demonstrations, practical exercises, and final output review sessions.

The Learning Modules

Module 1 – Foundations of Automotive Concept Design

Focus:

  • Current and future trends in the automotive industry
  • Brand and client analysis
  • Brief interpretation
  • Tools: Hand sketching, Photoshop & Blender

Output:

  • Practice communicating ideas to non-design audiences
  • Mobility concept development
  • Translation of brief requirements into visual design directions
  • Ability to shape early ideas without focusing on technical precision yet
  • Clear understanding of how every concept element responds to client needs
The first module at the "Automotive Design Experience" workshop programme by Konzepthaus in collaboration with C-LAB at Haus of Automotive during Milan Design Week focuses on the foundations of automotive concept design.
The second module at the "Automotive Design Experience" workshop programme by Konzepthaus in collaboration with C-LAB at Haus of Automotive during Milan Design Week focuses on automotive 3D design development thorugh tools such as Blender.

Module 2 — Automotive 3D Design Development

Focus:

  • 3D modeling for automotive visualisation
  • Overview of main tools used in the automotive design industry
  • Differences between 2D sketching and 3D modeling: workflow, accuracy, and advantages
  • How to translate moodboards, sketches, and ideas into 3D models
  • Basic modeling techniques
  • Importance of the client brief during the modeling phase
  • Preparation of models for the rendering pipeline
  • Tool: Blender and Autodesk Alias

Output:

  • Creation of a 3D model based on the first day’s sketch or following a provided client brief
  • Short peer review session to evaluate model consistency with the original brief

Module 3 — Immersive Visualisation & Virtual Design Review

Focus:

  • Automotive lighting visualisation
  • Software overview
  • Import of 3D models created the previous day (or provided by C-LAB) and preparation for visualisation
  • Material, texture, and lighting application
  • Introduction to virtual reality workflows: Oculus setup and VRED integration
  • Real-time interaction with 3D models in a virtual environment for design evaluation
  • Tool: Autodesk VRED

Output:

  • Professional render setup for design presentation
  • Creation of a presentation scene with materials and lighting
  • VR exploration of the model with the possibility to apply real-time design adjustments
The third module at the "Automotive Design Experience" workshop programme by Konzepthaus in collaboration with C-LAB at Haus of Automotive during Milan Design Week focuses on immersive visualisation and virtual design review with VR technology such as Autodesk Alias.
The fourth module at the "Automotive Design Experience" workshop programme by Konzepthaus in collaboration with C-LAB at Haus of Automotive during Milan Design Week focuses on integrating AI tools such as Vizcom in future design workflows.
